Glenn Industrial Group Executes High-Stakes Spillway Gate Emergency at North Carolina Hydroelectric Dam

Charlotte, NC 鈥?August 21, 2025 Glenn Industrial Group LLC was mobilized on an emergency basis to a hydroelectric facility in North Carolina following a failure during routine spillway gate testing. A floating caisson became dislodged, resulting in significant impact damage to the nearly 100-year-old spillway gate structure.

To stabilize the situation, Glenn worked in lockstep with plant personnel to manage reservoir levels and implemented real-time remote monitoring using an Aware Monitoring Systems IOT flood sensor. The caisson, pinned against the upstream gate faced by intense differential pressure, posed a structural risk to the entire gate assembly.

Glenn was tasked with the design, fabrication, and installation of a temporary downstream stop log system to equalize water pressure and enable safe caisson release. Once stabilized, the caisson was safely refloated and returned to storage. Glenn personnel performed immediate structural repairs to the damaged caisson.

Following its repositioning and reinstallation, the area between the caisson and the gate was dewatered, revealing severe damage to the lower gate section. Glenn and its subcontractors then replaced the entire lower section with new structural steel鈥攅xecuting all underwater welding and structural integration without requiring full gate removal. All work was completed under strict engineering oversight to ensure long-term structural integrity.
